He tried various names but finally settled on linoleum. Other competitors came into the market and whist they produced the solidified linseed oil sheets they managed to find quicker and cheaper ways. They also called it linoleum and eventually he took some competitors to court for using his trade name. Unfortunately for Mr Walton this was 14 years after his patent and the judge ruled that as he had not registered the name it was now a generic term and in the public domain. In 1877 the biggest production place (6 companies) in the world was in Kirkcaldy in Scotland.
